Situated in Dan Hoa commune, Thanh Oai district, far from Hanoi centre about 30 km in the north, Vac village is the ideal destination for bird tenders and visitors. Bird cages in the village are famous whole the country and are exported to many countries in the world for its high quality and nice decoration. The craft of making bird cages in Vac Village has existed for a long time and is passed down from generation to generation. In the French colonial era, villagers took great pride of their signature bird cages that won various medals in exhibitions in Hanoi.
Nowadays, over 100 households in the village are engaged in birth cage making. Thanks to this profession, people’s living standard in the village has been improved.
To meet the three criteria for durable, beautiful, luxuriousness, village’s craftsmen experience many complicated stages. For material selection, the bamboo is from northern mountainous provinces such as Hoa Binh, Cao Bang. After that, bamboo is soaked in water, and then dried to make bamboo splints.
Another interesting thing is that artisans making bird cages must have certain knowledge about the shape and behavior of different birds to make suitable cages in both shape and size.
With skillful hand and creativity, artisans have created beautiful bird cages from their own familiar sources of bamboos to satisfy people’s bird collection pursuit.
