Viet Nam is globally famed for its unique and attractive water puppetry; thus, this year, the capital of Hanoi is chosen as the host of the fourth International Puppetry Festival from October 10-16. This event captivates many puppeteers and artists from nationwide, nine foreign countries and throngs of both local and foreign tourists.
Apart from the host of Vietnam, audience will witness fascinating competing performances from troupes including Russia, Germany, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Belgium and the Philippines. Art shows are of great importance in enhancing local spiritual life as well as helping foreign friends to gain a deeper inside into Vietnamese culture.
Water puppetry is Vietnam’s traditional art form, believed to have derived from the villages of the Northern Delta during the 11th century.
Water puppet shows recount Vietnamese legends like Legend of the Restored Sword of King Le or folk tales, taking the audience on a journey of ancient village life, agricultural harvests and dances of mythical creatures.
In addition, participating troupes will perform in the northern provinces of Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Hai Duong and Vinh Phuc and Thanh Hoa Province in the central region.
